What is cloaking?

URL cloaking (also known as link masking or link framing) is a technique that allows you to display content from another website while keeping your own domain visible in the visitor’s browser address bar.

How URL cloaking works

When you create a cloaked link with ShortLinks Pro:

  • Your server loads an HTML page from your domain.
  • This page contains a full-size iframe that displays the destination website.
  • The visitor’s browser continues to display your domain in the address bar.
  • The content they see comes from the destination website.

Benefits of URL Cloaking

Brand Protection: Maintain your brand presence throughout the user experience by keeping your domain visible.

Affiliate Marketing: Present affiliate offers while maintaining your domain as the visible URL, creating a more seamless experience and potentially improving conversion rates.

Traffic Control: Technically, visitors remain on your domain, which can:

  • Reduce bounce rates in analytics.
  • Allow for easier return to your content.
  • Enable additional tracking opportunities.

Link Continuity: If a destination URL changes, you can update the cloaked link without changing the URL your audience uses.

Important Considerations

Compatibility: Some websites block being displayed in iframes for security reasons, which can prevent cloaking from working properly.

Transparency: While cloaking is useful for many legitimate purposes, it’s important to maintain transparency with your audience about where links lead.

Mobile Experience: On mobile devices, the framed experience may not always display optimally depending on the target site’s mobile responsiveness.
